Water, Food, and the Future

Every meal on our table begins with a simple question: How can we continue producing enough food when water is becoming increasingly scarce?

Food production depends on water, yet water resources are becoming increasingly strained in many parts of the world. At the same time, farmers are expected to feed a growing population while facing changing weather patterns and environmental pressures.

This is where the Water-Food Futures project comes in. Our goal is to address one of the most important challenges of our time: how to produce enough food while managing water resources sustainably.

Our team is working to better understand how agricultural systems can remain productive while using water more efficiently. Through field research, data analysis, modelling, and collaboration with stakeholders, we are generating knowledge that can help shape sustainable farming practices while supporting food security, economic viability, and environmental stewardship.

At the heart of the project are field experiments conducted on an organic farm in Hyvinkää, Finland, where we study how crops, soils, and management practices respond to different water conditions. Working within an organic production system provides an opportunity to evaluate how crops perform under conditions that rely more heavily on ecological processes and efficient resource use. This makes the site particularly valuable for studying strategies that can improve water-use efficiency and resilience in sustainable agriculture. However, the project goes beyond the field. By combining measurements, modelling approaches, and collaboration across disciplines, we aim to transform scientific findings into practical solutions that can support farmers, policymakers, and society.

Field research combines soil moisture and crop measurements, groundwater table monitoring, and weather observations to better understand how crops, soils, and water interact under different environmental conditions.

This blog marks the beginning of a journey into the world of Water-Food Futures field experiments. In the weeks ahead, we will take you behind the scenes of our field activities, share the challenges and discoveries we encounter, and showcase the people working to build a more resilient agricultural future.
